How long have you been a Heliski guide?

I started as a Heliski guide in 1989, so for 18 years now! Here in Queenstown.

How did you get your start in guiding?

I started working in the ski industry aged 18, first as a ‘Lifty’ and then a ski instructor. After a few years I went over to Europe and hung out for 3 seasons in ST. Anton, Austria.  Here I got rapid education in back country travel and avalanche awareness! so this prompted me to learn more. On my return to NZ I did my avalanche and first aid courses and was lucky to get a job as junior ski guide. From there I continued to train as a Ski and Mountain guide through the New Zealand Mountain guides Association.

An early snowstorm in the final days of October in the Colorado Front Range and Wyoming was Mother Natures approval for keeping the November start of the western ski season on schedule, if not accelerated.
